Today we had a chat to our pal Luke Bruin (Neptune's Trident) who was also kind enough to supply us with the first Butter Mix, a DJ set full of knee deep sounds and smooth grooves. Find out what the young and exciting DJ has been upto over the last year in the interview.
Butter - So Luke, your still quite new to the whole DJing saga yet over the last year we have seen you play a torrent of DJ sets across Melbourne. How did you get noticed as a DJ?
My old mate Louis McCoy gave me a big leg up… Apart from him I guess it would have to be our weekly night ‘Knee Deep’ at Miss Libertines that put my name out there.
Butter - Who where some of the people that made you want to become a DJ?
Butter - Who where some of the people that made you want to become a DJ?
I couldn’t put it down to any people specifically… I guess it just happened, as music is one of my passions.
Butter - Whos sound are you diggin right now?
Agnes from Switzerland would have to be my absolute favourite at the moment. His label sthmlaudio doesn’t have a massive output, but the style of deep house that he plays and his label puts out is right up my alley. Nice snares, claps and simple basslines. Trickski have also been doing it for me lately in terms of production along with Space Dimension Controller. Steffi’s new album is also on high rotation. Nicolas Jaar and James Blake’s albums have also been getting a workout respectively.
Butter - Whats been your favourite/ most memorable gig you've had in your time?
January 1st this year on the Blow You Own Way boat cruise supporting Quarion. He is one of my favourite Artists so being on the same bill as him was definitely memorable.

Butter - Do you ever plan on making a career from DJing or are you happy to do it as a side job?
I don’t see it as a career, more a hobby! It’s too much fun to take seriously.
Butter - For those that don't know, you run a night at Miss Libertine every Thursday called Knee Deep. You had quite abit of success with it in its short existence. Tell us a little about that night and how you went about starting it.
Knee Deep started at Miss Libertines last October. The night has gained quite a following and we really enjoy playing what we want and inviting like minded dj’s to come down and spin they’re own style. We’ve had people like Vince Watson, Louis Day, Mike Callander, Christian Vance etc come down which has really established the Knee Deep brand name. The night is pretty relaxed due to it being a Thursday night and it’s strictly deep house.
Butter - What can we expect from Knee Deep and Luke Bruin in 2011?
Funny you ask, our time at Miss Libertines is actually coming to a close and we’re looking to do other bigger and better things on not such a regular basis starting with a night we have called ‘Overture (Knee Deep)’ at Killing Time this Saturday. We’re also doing a show with Mike Callander and Revolver Fridays on March the 11th with special guests Trickski straight out of Berlin. We hope to have a couple more internationals playing for Knee Deep during the year as well.
Butter - Tell us about the mix that you have put together for us.
I wanted to do something that incorporated everything I like and the types of music that you would hear at a Knee Deep night.
