Butter: You've been working in the music industry for quite some time now being involved with London Records in the past and now working for Prime Direct Distribution. Can you tell us more about what you do for PDD and the work you done for Pete Tong?
DS:I've been producing for 16 years under many guises including Deeper Cut ,Supakings/ Alaska Soul with Mark Yardley of Stanton Warriors, Audio Drive with Martijn ten Velden and as David James.
'Always (A Permanent State)’ http://www.discogs.com/David-James-Always-A-Permanent-State-Promo-Disc-One/release/407103 was probably my biggest track to date.
I’ve been working in music since 1998, started out at State 51 studios in South London working with the likes of The Ballistic Brothers, Marshall Jefferson, X Press 2 and then the burgeoning UK Garage Scene with Tuff Jam at the head.
This was the place Mark Yardley and myself formed Supakings and also where Stanton Warriors first met, we all shared a debut 12" release called 'The Headz Of State EP' http://www.discogs.com/Stanton-Warriors--Deeper-Cut-Headz-Of-State-EP-Winter-Sampler/master/261545  from there I was headhunted to work as an A&R scout for London Records which from 2000 – 2004 involved me picking records for Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show.  It was a great job and included me going record shopping for a living! Travelling around the country looking for the best tunes and going to music conferences like Miami WMC & Cannes, it was a really great time.
I’ve been working as a Label manager for Prime Direct Distribution (PDD) for the last 7 years alongside my good friend Spencer Broughton we press vinyl for some of the best house / edits labels like Defected / Kolour Recordings / NRK / Wolf Music / Cosmic Boogie / Paper Recordings / Z Records / Melbourne Deepcast etc.

Butter: What influenced you to start making house music?
DS: I always loved music, from the age of 14 I started dj'ing, I would spend all my lunch money on vinyl and saved up to get my first Technics by working on a local market stall In Essex.
I played hip hop/electro & soul back then and was part of a sound system called UNITY we would play at all night parties.
I then moved to Norwich in 88 and took part in all the early Rave scene dj'ing at warehouse parties and big events around East Anglia. I became resident at Eclipse in Cambridge alongside Lee Coombs.  Lee was one of the first people I knew who made and released records, he inspired me to make music myself.
I moved to London completed a sound engineering course then gained experience by working in various studio's. All this has shaped what would follow, including gaining influences from experiences of dj'ing around the world working out what works with a crowd and translating that into my own sound and my interpretation.
It’s all gone full circle as I’m digging in the vaults for soul & funk tracks to sample for the new Beatdown sound.

Butter: Can you tell us more about the Giant Cuts project?
DS: I started Giant Cuts about 18 months ago to release my personal edits, it's going really well I’m up to Vol 6 on vinyl and have had support from some great dj's Greg Wilson / Sleazy Beats / Dj Raw Sugar / Gazeebo / Yam Who?? / Cosmic Boogie / Matthew Kyle etc.
I've started a new label called Original Cuts to release the more house / beatdown stuff with the first release from 78 Edits. Jamie is a real talent! I’m currently lining up the second release featuring Dj Raw Sugar from NZ and I have my own EP coming out soon after that.
Also a 7 inch series called '7SINS' which will be a limited edition, hand stamped and numbered, the first is a 2 track from 78 Edits & myself.

Butter: Being a label boss you must get a lot of demos. What do you look (listen) for in a track?
DS: I’m getting more and more via Giant Cuts. I look for something fresh with a bit of an edge really or if it’s a well known sample, that it's worked well with some good production techniques.
I hear lots of demo's and new music as label manager for PDD and look for the same thing, but also have to look to see if the track is going to appeal to the masses.

Butter: Where do you see the disco/ house scene headed in 2011?
DS: It's all pretty healthy right now lots of new artists coming out of unexpected places.
I love the whole Beatdown sound right now, there is always HOUSE music at the root and it always seems to come back to house at the end of the day, that 4x4 beat is like the heartbeat of a generation and I’m sure it will live on & on…

Butter: If we came knocking at your studio door what would we see inside?
DS: You would see a lot of records, I’m a vinyl junkie ! I still have my original Technics 1210's set up and still love to play vinyl whenever possible, which is not always possible when you travel oversea's to dj.   I have a dual processor quad core workstation running Abelton with some nice plug-ins, Universal Audio UAD  & Focusrite Saffire 6 soundcards, Rokit 8 Monitors and an Akai MPK88 I’ll be adding the 'Maschine' very soon.

Butter: Who's being playing in your earphones lately?
DS: I'm loving all the stuff coming from Melbourne right now, some really great artists like Fantastic Man / Lewie Day / The Tortoise / Andy Hart etc. Love the 6th Borough Project LP that’s incredible !  Zoo Look are doing some great stuff as is wolf Music. Looking toward to hearing the new Crazy P CD as well those guys always deliver.

Butter: Tell us about your upcoming releases for both Deadly Sins and Giant Cuts. What can we expect for the rest of 2011?
DS: 2011 is looking really good I’ve got a track coming out on the next KOLOUR LIMITED EP KLRLTD007,  the track is called 'Sometimes'  it will be pressed on Blue Vinyl alongside tracks from Zoo Look / The Glue & 78 Edits which I’m really pleased about.
New releases on Original Cuts & Giant Cuts and the 7 inch series, so lots to look out for in the coming weeks and months.

Butter: What can we expect to hear in the mix you have done for us?
DS: The mix is taken more down the house route, 118 bpm  with exclusive tracks from Kolour Recordings / Poussez / Cosmic Boogie & Deadly Sins (from my up coming ep 'Love is Crazy') I hope you enjoy it.
