A sessions with TRNSMT
Since late 2012, Melbourne lad, Sam 'Carmex' has been broadcasting audio and video online from the upstairs attic of Lounge Melbourne, showcasing Melbourne's best DJs, artists and crews 6 days a week via his website and brand TRNSMT. We had a quick chat with Sam to shed some more light on everything TRNSMT.
If you haven't locked into this yet, then keep your eyes peeled over at www.trnsmt.tv from 6pm - 12am Sunday - Friday!

TRNSMT seems to have filled a gap in the Melbourne Music scene, how long
have you been working on the idea? and can you tell us a little more
about what TRNSMT is, for those that don't know yet?
TRNSMT has been an idea I have worked on since August 2011 when I
approached a number of crews in Melbourne pitching a private party (out
the back of my house at the time) that would be streamed live to the
internet for people to watch.
After coming into problems with noise complaints and an annoyed landlord, we had to pull the plug on the party for the time being. While this party sort of came to a halt, I decided to fill a gap that wasn't currently being filled in the Melbourne music scene - live event coverage. I started up a small venture to stream events live to a website and have people watch and chat. I saw a heap of potential with this and I was doing at least 2 events a week. I did this up until about half way through 2012 when I began to want to do more. I was seeing a heap of talent coming through the gigs I was going to and being a DJ myself, I knew that there was so much talent in the Melbourne music scene that could only be found in those scarcely attended club events. I decided it was time to build something more interactive, something a bit bigger, so I approached all those crews I'd approached about the original party and then some.
I constructed a basic roster and decided to search for a studio so that we could begin scheduled online live broadcasts. I set a launch date of November 5th 2012 and went from there.
After approaching a number of landlords about properties, a number of brands about sponsorship and a number of businesses about funding - things sort of fell short. By late October (a couple of weeks before launch), I had no studio, no equipment and no one else to help me out. Luckily, a week before launch, Lounge pulled through with an opportunity for a space above their club in the store room. I managed to acquire equipment and we had our launch at Lounge on the 5th successfully. Since then it has been non stop, we broadcast live DJ sets 6 days a week, 6 hours a day with everything being recorded and put onto YouTube.

We've noticed a very wide range of DJ's and live acts over the weeks on TRNSMT. How did you choose the artists involved?
Basically the artists I selected for weekly and monthly slots are DJ's
that I have really enjoyed seeing live and DJ's that I see making quite
an impact on the Melbourne scene whether it be with the type of parties
they are running, International acts they are bringing down or unique
personalities they display when playing out. As I said, Melbourne has
such a rich spectrum of DJ's, live music acts and people involved in the
scene - TRNSMT aims at connecting everyone over this large spectrum.
Do you plan on going back to where it started for you by throwing parties in clubs and other venues?
Most definitely. We have a heap of events planned already for 2013. We
are also in the middle of planning a few live event broadcasts to take
place on Friday & Saturday nights
How has Melbourne reacted to introduction of this new medium?
The reaction from everyone has been really positive so far - most people
are really excited about the idea and they are pleased to see something
a little bit different. Music events have sort of plateaued recently as
there is now such a large music scene, so people like to see something a
bit different. Passion for music is on a constant rise so being able to
watch live DJ sets from home is a really convenient and pleasing thing
for people.
What else can we expect from TRNSMT in 2013?
A whole heap more live broadcasts, more cameras, more event coverage,
more events, merchandise, our first exclusive music release,
international guests, more djs, more music diversity, brand
collaborations & an app to listen/watch on your phone.
